An Introduction to the Psalms

with Kelley Lambert

The book of Psalms is much more than a random collection of prayers, poems, and hymns. Together, we’ll kick-start this conference by taking a deep dive into discovering the intentional craftsmanship of this unique book. We’ll consider the layout, authorship, and prevailing themes to prepare us to study the Psalms.

Praise the Lord, Oh my Soul – Psalm 146

with Jan Scott

Is it our highest goal to worship, honor, and glorify Yahweh? The psalms take us on a journey of highs and lows, much like our own lives, but build to a crescendo of praise for our Creator God. It is only fitting that the last 5 psalms in the collection each start and end with the word Hallelujah – Praise the Lord! Focusing on Psalm 146, we’ll come to see that as we progress in our Christian walk, as we grow in Christ likeness, our goal MUST be all-encompassing, boundless, never-ending praise!

Workshop Session 1

Psalm 19 - A Poem on the Pursuit of Wisdom

(with Joanna Warren)

Daily decisions, both small and large, often leave us wondering “Where does wisdom come from, and where is understanding located?” (Job 28:20) In Psalm 19, we will walk with David as he acknowledges and exalts the Giver of wisdom, reveals and praises the source of wisdom, and expresses the value and beauty of a wisdom-filled life. With reverential awe and practical application, we will see both that “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” (Psalm 111:10) and that “Wisdom is supreme.” (Prov. 4:7) As women desiring to draw closer to God’s own heart, the lyrical prose of this Psalm will encourage and challenge us to diligently pursue wisdom.

Psalms of Lament are Psalms of Faith

(with Mary Ann Odom)

The idea of lamenting often has a negative connotation of a helpless state of sorrow and regret; yet for a believer, this is not the case! We will explore two Psalms—Psalm 13 and Psalm 85—that are powerful expressions of two kinds of lament that help promote a process of spiritual healing. During this time together, we will discover and openly discuss the power of these prayerful cries to the Father in our times of greatest need.

Psalm 119 - Celebrating God's Law

(with Kimberlee Falkenstine)

Explore how God’s Word calls us to a deep devotion and celebratory love for the instruction, commands, and revealed character of God through Psalm 119. We will start with a short overview of the longest chapter in the Bible! Then we will focus on verses 97-112. Through open discussion, we’ll seek to share the psalmist’s reverence and passion for God’s teachings and be inspired to view divine law not merely as rules but as the source of joy, wisdom, and guidance.

O Give Thanks to the Lord, for He is Good

(with Bianca Gantt)

The Psalms abound with thanksgiving! Join me in this workshop dedicated to exploring the theme of thanksgiving in the Psalms. We will delve into Psalm 118 to uncover the essence of gratitude and praise. We’ll reflect on the power of thanksgiving (even when it’s not easy) as we journey through this relatable text together.

Workshop Session 2

A Song of Confidence in the Lord

(with Lou Horton)

Psalm 27 describes beautiful lessons we can learn from God’s Word. Our God is great and is on the throne in heaven. He is our light and our salvation, the source of all things good. In this Psalm, David shares his courageous trust in the Lord. He writes words from his heart that tells us how confident he is in the Lord. He seeks out the Lord for his blessings and his protection. And so we are encouraged and know that we too can experience hope, security, and rest in God.

The History of god's people in the psalms

(with Loretta Nally)

The historical psalms are primarily located in the middle of the book of Psalms, serving as a transition from the days of exile to the hope of a future restored. These psalms prompt God’s people to reflect on their personal and collective past. Each individual psalm stands out as a vivid scene in the overarching narrative, encompassing elements of faith, failure, repentance, and judgment held together by God’s mercy. The last set of historical psalms serves as refrains of gratefulness as God’s people look forward. Studying the historical psalms will bring each of these aspects into practical application today.

A Broken and Contrite Heart: Repentance in the Psalms

(with Bonnie Silcox)

Psalm 38 describes personal inequity too heavy for David, who is feeble and crushed, to carry. Psalm 51 tells us that brokenness over sin is a sacrifice to our Holy God. Yet, no one wants to feel feeble, crushed and broken. In this session, we’ll talk about repentance and what it means to have a contrite heart. We’ll consider how New Covenant believers understand these truths in light of the Gospel of Jesus the Christ. Lastly we’ll examine the tension between living a joyless life stuck in brokenness or one never mourning our sin that risks cheapening His grace.

Prophetic Psalms tell of the coming messiah

(with Heather Wiggins)

The Messiah is one of the dominant themes of the book of Psalms. The Messiah’s life, death, and resurrection are all prophesied in the Psalms. In this session, we will look at the many references to the Messiah throughout the book and their ultimate fulfillment in the New Testament, with a special emphasis on the prophecies concerning Christ’s crucifixion in Psalm 22.

Workshop Session 3

Follow First, Lead Second

(with Rene Bahrenfuss)

Explore practicalities of small-group leadership and this fundamental truth: a Christian leader must attend to her relationship with the Lord before she can effectively lead. We will examine Scriptures that demonstrate how the greatest small-group leader ever—Jesus—first attended to his own obedient relationship with His Father. Should we do any less?

Discerning Worship

(with Bekah Hawk)

The Bible commands us to worship God in spirit and truth, but what does that mean? Together we will explore what the Bible teaches about worship in the Psalms. We will discover that worship is much more than singing songs in church, or an emotional feeling when music hits us just right. Finally, we will make practical applications to our lives concerning what Godly worship looks like and how discerning lyrics will help us to praise to our King!

From red ink to revelation: A Biblical grammar workshop

(with Lovina Goad )

In this workshop, we’ll explore the importance of understanding grammar in biblical analysis. We’ll examine how grammatical structures, syntax, and semantics shape our interpretation of Scripture and discuss practical methods for annotating verses to deepen our understanding of God’s Word. Whether you’re a “red ink survivor” or an expert editor, this workshop will help you take the grammatical skills you’ve learned (or are learning!) and use them to explore the rich meaning of Scripture.

Loving Your Children: What's Love Got to Do With It

(with Pam Recod)

As Christian mothers, we are commanded to care and provide for, protect, instruct, discipline, evangelize, and disciple our children. But what does the Bible say about loving them? (John 13:34, Titus 2:4) Isn’t love supposed to come naturally? Is loving my children the same as always loving each season of parenting, be it toddler or twenty-year-old? How do I show love towards the unlovely things in my child’s life? Come find guidance and encouragement for these questions and more from the truth of God’s Word.
